As a Refinement Operator, the following skills and qualifications are essential for success in this role:
Technical Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of petroleum refining processes and equipment.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining various types of distillation columns, cracking units, and other process units.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and specifications.
- Familiarity with safety instruments, controls, and systems used for monitoring and controlling processes.
- Strong understanding of process control systems, including PLCs and DCS.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques for refinery equipment and processes.
Safety Skills:
- Comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and standards applicable to petroleum refining operations.
- Ability to identify potential hazards, implement safety measures, and respond effectively to emergencies.

- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and build positive relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively with operators, maintenance personnel, and control room staff during shift changes and emergencies.
Education & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field is preferred. An Associate's degree or relevant technical diploma, combined with significant experience in the industry, may be considered.
- Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) is advantageous but not required.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record are essential for this role.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in petroleum refining operations, preferably in a similar role as a Refinery Operator or Process Operator.
- Experience with various types of crude oils and refined products is essential.
- Knowledge of the specific refinery processes used in South Ayrshire would be advantageous.
