Position: Water Quality Modeller

Location: South East Region

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Water Quality Modeller to join our dynamic team in the South East Region. In this role, you will play a crucial part in contributing to sustainable water management solutions, using advanced modelling techniques to predict, analyze, and manage water quality issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, apply, and maintain hydrological and water quality models for various projects within the South East Region.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation to support decision-making processes.
  • Perform hydrodynamic and water quality simulations using state-of-the-art modeling software.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations based on modelling results.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative water quality management strategies and solutions.
  • Participate in regulatory compliance activities related to water quality standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of current water quality issues, regulations, and best practices within the South East Region.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) as a Water Quality Modeller, preferably with a focus on the South East Region.
  • Proficiency in using hydrological and water quality modeling software, such as SWAT, MIKE SHE, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • A passion for environmental conservation and water resource management.
  • Knowledge of local and national water quality regulations is beneficial.

Skill Set

As a Water Quality Modeller in South East, the following skills and qualifications are essential:

Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, or a related field is required. A Master's degree in one of these fields is preferred.
  • Relevant coursework in hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, statistics, and computer programming is essential.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in using models such as SWAT, MIKE SHE, QUAL2K, or other relevant water quality modeling software is required.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial data analysis and visualization is essential.
  • Knowledge of statistical software packages like R or Python for data analysis is desirable.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as C++, Fortran, or MATLAB for model development and customization is a plus.

Water Quality Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of water quality parameters, including dissolved oxygen, pH, nutrients, and contaminants.
  • Knowledge of water quality regulations, guidelines, and standards in the South East region is necessary.
  • Understanding of hydrological processes, such as precipitation, evapotranspiration, and groundwater flow, is essential.

Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Ability to analyze complex water quality data and interpret results to make informed recommendations.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to develop innovative solutions for water quality management challenges.

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present findings effectively to a variety of audiences, including technical experts and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to write comprehensive reports, prepare presentations, and develop educational materials related to water quality modeling.

Collaboration Skills:

  • Strong teamwork abilities to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, and managers.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Professional Qualifications (if applicable):

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) certification is preferred but not required.
  • Membership in professional organizations such as the Water Environment Federation, American Water Works Association, or similar is a plus.
